Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, by national published figures. On a typical narrow Lincoln Park lot, a back and side fence of about 150 feet would land between $3,000 and $9,000 at those rates. We do not keep a price list for the city, because each lot is different: footage, height, gates, the old fence that has to come out and what is buried in the clay all change the total.
These price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Local labor, material prices and the conditions in your yard push the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |

How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
Nationally, a 6-foot privacy fence runs $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table below shows totals at the general $20 to $60 range. A full privacy fence needs more boards and stouter posts than a short picket fence, so expect the upper half of each row.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link, starting near $9 per foot by national figures. It is also what most Lincoln Park yards already have. For privacy on a tight budget, a pressure-treated pine fence with dog-ear boards is the usual answer. To keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, a 5 or 6 foot chain link fence with a tension wire at the bottom does the job for less than any solid fence.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Yes, aluminum is cheaper than wrought iron, at $25 to $75 per foot against $50 to $85. Its range overlaps vinyl ($30 to $60). Black powder-coated aluminum will not rust, which counts for a lot on a front or corner yard where plows throw salt slush at the fence every winter.
How much extra does a gate cost?
A gate is priced on its own line. The width, the material and the hardware set the cost. A walk gate beside the house is the smallest add. A wide gate onto the alley costs more, because it needs heavier posts and deeper footings to stop it sagging, and an automatic opener adds again.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We price these on site because they vary so much. In Lincoln Park the usual extras are taking out the old chain link and the concrete around its posts, clearing vines and volunteer trees that have grown into the fence along the alley, and breaking through old slabs or brick buried where a garage once stood. Lincoln Park lots are mostly flat, so slope is rarely the cost driver here.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
The one that spells out the most. Line the quotes up and check the footage, height, material grade, post size, post depth, number of gates, removal of the old fence, haul-away and the permit. Post depth is where the gap usually hides. Lincoln Park inspects post holes at 42 inches before concrete goes in, so a quote with shallow holes is not just cheaper, it will not pass.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A solid, good-looking fence helps a house sell, especially to buyers with dogs or small children. It rarely pays back its full cost at sale. Whether it changes your assessment is up to the city assessor.
